Janet Read
I am the leader of the ChiCI group and a senior lecturer in HCI, working in the Department of Computing at UCLan. I currently supervise five HCI PhD students, including four in Child Computer Interaction.
I have delivered several research seminars, tutorials, and short courses, on Child Computer Interaction, both in the UK and Europe. In June 2006, I delivered a MasterClass on CCI at IDC2006 in Finland. I am currently teaching modules on Designing for Children and Evaluating for Children as part of the MSc in Child Computer Interaction at UCLAN.
I have been on the organising committees for IDC 2002, NordiChi 2004, HCI2005, IDC2005 and FNG2006. I am a reviewer for four major conferences, for the journal Interacting with Computers, and for the International Journal in HCI. The Royal Society, the LTSN, the LDDA, and the Royal Academy of Engineering have funded some of my research work.
Current Projects in CCI
I am interested in the long term usefulness and usability of handwriting recognition technology and pen computers to support the development of writing in the school classroom. This has led me to develop an interest in the evaluation of fun and usability, particularly where there are novel interfaces involved. Another strand is the design of interactive products for and with children, using participative and co-operative approaches. I am project director of the Beam project (Broadband Enabled Activities for Museums), which is concerned with the development of a portable wireless environment for children.
More details of my work can be found on my academic homepage.
